With just a couple of weeks of school left, my family is eager to hit the road. Our plans this summer include trips to Montreal, NYC, Boston, Burlington, VT, Pennsylvania Dutch Country and Cape Cod. How do we keep from busting our belts when road food beckons? We splurge on treats when it’s warranted (I could never pass up the thick, creamy clam chowder at Cape Cod’s Lobster Trap) and prepare the majority of snacks in our car or hotel room. That’s the crux of Snacktivitymom.com; anytime, anyplace is the time for creative snacking.
For my family, snacking isn’t just about satisfying a food craving; snacktivating, as we call making fun snacks together, fuels our creativity. We can’t help smiling when we stick pretzels into a melon to create a Sweet & Salty Porcupine, turn a lowly piece of citrus into a Happy Orange and fashion rice cakes into a Monkey Munchie. Each recipe only takes a few minutes, and no special skills are required.
Why take the extra time to snacktivate when you could simply grab a handful of raisins or an apple? I’ve found when my kids take the time to make a snacktivity, they’re more likely to eat slowly, eat healthy, and have fun doing it. Bring along a basket of essentials and you, too, will be good to go.
Crank up the tunes for even more fun. We love the beat of the German band Sleeping Policemen, which graciously allowed us to use their hit, Vogelbird, for our Snacktivitymom.com theme. Check out their website for more great songs.
